I sometimes think of parenting as a relay race, where the baton is passed from one developmental stage to the next. The difference is that, in this race, parents are continually passing and receiving the baton, supporting and adapting as their child grows. Just like any race, it requires engagement, consistency, and strategy.
Your child does not need a perfect parent. Your child needs an engaged parent.
Every child is unique, but during the early years (0–6), parents need the knowledge and strategies to understand and support their child’s development.
The Brain Matters documentary offers a powerful reminder that the brain is dynamic and shaped by experience. Key messages include:
- Early childhood is a critical period for brain development.
- Relationships and responsive interactions shape the developing brain.
- Talk, read, sing, and engage in “serve-and-return” interactions.
- Play and movement support development.
- Sleep, nutrition, and health matter.
- Children need safe, stable, and loving environments.
- Prolonged stress without support can affect development.

Every interaction counts. Every experience matters. And every child deserves the opportunity to thrive.
